COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A school bus with 17 middle and high school students from the Jefferson City School District was involved in a crash on Thursday morning.

School district spokeswoman Ryan Burns told ABC 17 News that a car rear-ended the bus on the way to school on Route T at Parkview Road in St. Martins. Burns said EMS responded to the scene to assess those on board.

A traffic alert from the county went out at 8:19 a.m. to avoid the area.

Cole County EMS said in a news release that eight ambulances were sent to the scene because of the number of people on board. Both drivers were taken to Capital Region Medical Center with minor injuries, according to a Missouri State Highway Patrol report. Two students were also taken to the hospital, and the release labeled their condition "stable."

The students were a 12-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl, the MSHP report states. They were both taken to St. Mary's Hospital with minor injuries.

The passenger vehicle was a Chevrolet Trail Blazer driven by a 61-year-old Jefferson City man. The patrol identified the bus driver as a 46-year-old Jefferson City woman.

The other 15 students were evaluated and released to school officials.
