Jefferson City, Cole County to use new software for tornado warning sirens

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

New changes Jefferson City’s and Cole County’s outdoor weather warning siren system, according to a Friday press release from the Jefferson City Police Department.

The acquisition of the Rapid Warn software, has allowed officials to divide the county into seven activation zones. The outdoor warning sirens will activate for two severe weather events; tornado warning and severe thunderstorm warning tagged as “destructive,” the release states

According to a release, the new software will give a targeted activation of the sirens and not activate sirens in areas that are not affected by storms.

The sirens are also now automated based on the data being received from the National Weather Service in order to reduce any delays, the release states.
