JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Jefferson City man was charged on Wednesday with domestic assault and other felonies after he allegedly tried to shoot a woman on Tuesday.

Orlando Sayles, 30, was charged with first-degree domestic assault, three counts of armed criminal action, illegal gun possession, unlawful use of a weapon and two counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, both misdemeanors.

He is being held at the Cole County jail without bond, according to court records. An arraignment is set for 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Cole County Circuit Court.

According to the probable cause statement, Jefferson City police were called to a residence on Dulle Street in reference to a report of a drunk man who had fired a gun. Police arrived after Sayles left the area in a black Dodge Caliber. The victim told police that Sayles was drunk and started yelling at her for not taking out a loan to pay his lawyer fees, the statement says.

Sayles allegedly threatened to shoot the victim and also pistol whip her if he didn’t shoot, the statement says. The victim told police that she and Sayles were in a relationship and two children were in the home, as well as a witness, the statement says.

Police saw a bullet hole in a mattress and found a fired bullet on the floor, the statement says. The victim allegedly told police that she was sitting on the mattress while the witness was texting EMS so Sayles couldn’t hear a call for police, the statement says. The victim allegedly told Sayles he needed to leave, Sayles asked her to bring him a trash bag for his clothes and then tried to shoot her, the statement says.

Sayles allegedly was texting threats to the victim while police were at the residence. Officers in the area then conducted a traffic stop on Sayles’ vehicle while he was allegedly on his way back to the residence, the statement says.

Sayles allegedly told police that there was no argument, but allegedly admitted to shooting the gun at the bed.  The statement says he is a sex offender and not allowed to own a gun.
