No injuries reported in Jefferson City warehouse fire

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

No injuries were reported after a fire broke out Tuesday at Culligan of Jefferson City.

Jefferson City Assistant Fire Chief Jay Niemeyer said the fire started due to a bird’s nest inside the flue of a heater.

Firefighters found fire in the wall at the back of the building and spread to the attic of the warehouse, a Tuesday night press release from JCPD said. The release stated that firefighters removed "significant sections of the back wall to make access to the fire. Minor damage was reported, though a figure was not available.

"Before you turn on your heat appliances in the winter, it should be checked by a trained service technician to ensure there aren't major issues with the appliance before you turn it on that can cause a fire like this," Niemeyer said at the scene.

Niemeyer  later said in a press release that the cause of the fire was from a faulty exhaust pipe on a heating appliance. The faulty pipe caused the wood and insulation around the exhaust to catch on fire and then the fire extended inside of the wall.

East McCarty Street was blocked off while the fire was put out, according to the release.
