Show-Me State Games return for week two as extreme heat settles in
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
The ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather Team has issued a Weather Alert Day as hot temperatures are expected this weekend and the Show-Me State Games week two start Friday.
Tennis, baseball, youth tackle football and track and field all have events starting Friday and go through the weekend.
The Stormtrack Weather Team said Saturday and Sunday are expected to be the hottest of this stretch before rain could possibly cool us down on Monday.
The director of the Show-Me State Games, Dave Fox said safety is a top priority in this heat.
"Whether they are heat safety tips or excessive heat warnings and things that we can do within the games to adjust to try and do the best we can do to make everybody comfortable and not create any problems," Fox said.
In order to stay as safe as possible, the weather team said you should try to avoid any strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the day, between noon and 6 p.m.
"Make sure you're staying hydrated and applying ample sunscreen if you must spend a significant amount of time outside. Keep pets in mind and make sure they have a shady shelter with plenty of water, and limit their exercise to morning and evening when the pavement is cooler," ABC 17 Stormtrack Meteorologists said.
The Show-Me State Games has recommendations to stay safe in the heat including how to prevent dehydration and heat stroke.
Tennis matches start at 8:30 a.m. Friday at Cosmo-Bethel park.
