Mexico animal shelter fire caused by ‘improper disposal of smoking material’

MEXICO, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Dec. 14 fire at an animal shelter in Mexico was caused by “improper disposal of smoking material,” according to a Friday press release from the Mexico Department of Public Safety.

No injuries to people or animals were reported. All 30 dogs and cats were safely removed from the Mexico Animal Shelter. Friday’s press release states that all of the cats have been rehomed, but there are about 10 dogs that still need a home. Those interested in adopting should call -573-581-2100 extension 315, the release states.

The release states the City of Mexico is working with its insurance company to determine the best way to start shelter services again.

The Mexico Animal Shelter wrote on Facebook on Monday that it will be closed until further notice.

According to a press release from last week, the southern part of the building had “significant fire damage,” while the northern part of the building had smoke and water damage.

Damage estimates were not available.
