No animals hurt in fire at Mexico Animal Shelter

MEXICO, Mo. (KMIZ)

No animals or people were hurt in a fire at the Mexico Animal Shelter on Thursday, according to a press release from the Mexico Department of Public Safety.

The Mexico Public Safety Department responded to a fire call at 10:23 a.m. Personnel allegedly found an outside wall burning and fire in the attic of the building, the release states.

All 30 dogs and cats were safely removed from the building by MPSD, shelter staff and volunteers, the release states.

The release also states that staff found places for the animals to stay, temporarily. According to a social media post from the Audrain Humane Society, the animals are being housed at the Mexico Animal Hospital.

The southern part of the building had “significant fire damage,” while the northern part of the building had smoke and water damage, the release states. Damage estimates were not available and the cause of the fire is under investigation, the release states.

The release states that the city is working to resume animal control and shelter operations as soon as possible.
