JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Monday morning fire in the 2200 block of Buehrle Drive in Jefferson City was likely caused by an improperly discarded cigarette, according to a fire report by the Jefferson City Fire Department.

The report states several cigarettes were found in the area of origin and an occupant stated she and a friend had been smoking on the patio of the house. The fire started under the deck and the report states that officials believe a cigarette butt fell through the cracks of the decking and set dead plants on fire.

According to the report, the fire caught old wood decking material under the deck, which then eventually spread into the attic space of the building.

The fire was ruled accidental. One neighbor was injured while trying to notify an occupant at the house.
