Fire ravages abandoned house northwest of Columbia

BOONE COUNTY, Mo. (KMIZ)

An abandoned house is a total loss after a fire Thursday morning in northwest Columbia.

The Boone County Fire Protection District responded to the fire shortly after 7:30 a.m. Thursday. District spokesman Gale Blomenkamp said a little after 9 a.m. that the fire was out. The house was a total loss, he said. The cause was under investigation at that time.

A neighbor reported the fire in the 2100 Block of West Sycamore Hills Road. It is located northwest of Columbia, near North Creasy Springs Road.

Firefighters at the scene said the home was abandoned. The Boone County Fire Protection District said crews had to use a chainsaw to cut through the brush to get to the building. One firefighter on the scene had a minor facial laceration and was taken for medical treatment.

ABC 17 News crews saw heavy smoke in the area shortly after 8 a.m.
