First responders on Melbourne Street after a house fire was called out on Thursday.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

UPDATE 1/31: The Columbia Fire Department said in a news release that a Thursday fire at a home on Melbourne Street started in a storage room on the southwest side of the house.

An assistant fire marshal is investigating the cause, the department said. The fire caused about $16,000 worth of damage.

ORIGINAL: The Columbia Fire Department contained a house fire called out on the 300 block of Melbourne Street on Thursday.

CFD tweeted just before 5 p.m. that firefighters were called to a fire on Melbourne Street just off of College Avenue.

Columbia firefighters told our crew at the scene it took about 10-15 minutes for crews to contain the fire. CFD assistant fire chief Brad Fraizer said flames were seen coming from the back of the house.

Firefighters said a cat was rescued from the home. Fraizer said no one was home when crews responded.

Investigators say they are still looking into what caused the fire.
