Phi Gamma Delta's MU chapter hit with hazing violation last semester, alcohol violation in August

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Phi Gamma Delta, the fraternity at the center of the University of Missouri's suspension of fraternity activities across campus, was hit with a hazing violation in the spring 2021 semester and an alcohol violation in August.

The fraternity, which MU leaders said Wednesday is now suspended after a freshman was hospitalized with alcohol poisoning, was ordered to undergo alcohol education after the August violation, according to a university website.

The national Phi Gamma Delta organization says its working with the University of Missouri and local officials to investigate and gather all relevant facts about what happened with the student who was taken to the hospital.

"We are deeply saddened by this incident and our thoughts, prayers and wishes for a speedy recovery are with our new member and his family," Rob Caudill, the International Fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta executive director said in a statement. "Our highest priority is the safety of our members and guests, and we have strict risk management polices related to alcohol use and safety concerns."

Phi Gamma Delta was temporarily suspended on Wednesday by both the university and its national organization after "a freshman participating in a social event at the Phi Gamma Delta house was transported to the hospital due to concerns about alcohol poisoning," MU said in a news release.

"Phi Gamma Delta has temporarily suspended the Chi Mu Chapter at the University of Missouri, and will take immediate and appropriate action based on the findings of an investigation," Caudill said.

The InterFraternity Council (IFC) and the University of Missouri also halted all fraternity activities, including any social events.

The university's website says the chapter scorecards are meant to provide academic measures for fraternities and sororities within the Interfraternity Council, Multicultural Greek Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council and Panhellenic Association.

The data for the reports are gathered from reporting by each chapter and council. The scorecard shows Phi Gamma Delta last semester was the only fraternity to receive a hazing violation.

It also shows last semester the fraternity had 146 active members, with a chapter semester GPA of 3.132, below average among the other fraternities at MU.

Pi Kappa Phi and Theta Chi both received alcohol violations in the Spring 2021 semester.

The student's name and condition have not yet been released.
