COVID-19 could impact fall enrollment, local business

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Representatives with the University of Missouri met in an online town hall Tuesday afternoon to discuss cuts expected to be made to Mizzou in the coming months.

System President Mun Choi went into detail about the cuts, saying the budget at the university may be cut up to 15%.

Choi went on to talk about how that may affect enrollment in the fall. Choi said he expects a soft enrollment, citing a poll in which 11% of students who said they would attend a four-year university are now saying they are unable to afford it.

With Columbia's economy relying heavily on students being in the city, ABC 17 News also spoke with Columbia Chamber of Commerce President Matt McCormick about what this could mean for the businesses in the city.

McCormick prefaced his comments by saying it is difficult to give projections as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact Missouri.

He then went on to say that students not only at Mizzou but also Columbia College and Stephens College play a vital role in the success of the community. He praised Mizzou in saying that the university has always worked with the community and is hoping this is no different.

McCormick says those looking to still support local business should do so by shopping at these stores online.
