CPS faces adversity on the first day of remote learning
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Columbia Public Schools students and families hit an early yet short-lived roadblock in their first day of distance learning Monday.
CPS told families Monday morning that there were widespread issues with Schoology, a source for students to access assignments during this remote learning time.
Michelle Baumstark, CPS spokeswoman, said it was a nationwide outage issue but the site was quickly back up and running.
Teachers sent emails to parents and students saying Schoology crashed because of the increased demand.
One teacher told students to take a deep breath, relax, and carry on, as she sent all assignments to the students in an email and said her students could text her with any questions.
Emily King, a Hickman High School student, said she when she tried using Schoology this morning nothing was loading and it wouldn't allow her to click on the link to open the lesson.
“I had a few teachers send direct links in our emails to the lessons instead of having to go through Schoology just to try to avoid all those problems,” said King.
King said with this many people using Schoology she expected some trial and error.
“It’s not just CPS that is having all of these people on Schoology," said King "Probably thousands of other high schools at least that are using Schoology as a tool to get kids their assignments and everything that they need.”
King said since Schoology is an important source for her online learning classes she is worried more issues could happen again.
“I mean ya I’m a little concerned it’ll happen again," said King. "But I think it was a pretty quick time period they got it done today so hopefully it won't be much longer than that in the future."
CPS stated that all CPS applications are functioning and asked parents and students to refrain from contacting the help desk regarding Schoology.
CPS said students and parents could monitor system and application issues or outages on the district website.
