Middle school students in the Morgan County R-2 School District were temporarily evacuated Thursday morning after a bomb threat was made at 7 a.m., according to a press release from the school district.

“Our established bomb threat policy provides guidance regarding the evacuation of students and personnel in the event of a threat such as this,” the release states. “Administration, working with law enforcement, determined it was necessary to evacuate the middle school building.”

The middle school building was evacuated. The release states K-9s were used to search the school and no explosives were found. Students were sent back to class after the building was cleared by law enforcement.

Superintendent Marc Spunaugle told ABC 17 News in an email that the school was evacuated from 7:15-9:15 a.m. A release sent from the Versailles Police Department states police obtained a phone number used in the threat and the cellphone used in the threat was found. Police say they have identified a "person of interest" and are still investigating.

Spunaugle said the call was received in the middle school office.

“We can assure you that we will continue to be diligent in working with the local police department to respond to any threat to students or staff and those that make those threats will be dealt with in accordance with applicable laws,” the school's release states. “We all play a vital role in any school-wide safety effort; it is the duty and responsibility of students, staff, and families to report any potential threats to the proper individuals in a timely manner.”
