MEXICO, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Mexico School District has placed a PE teacher on paid administrative leave while it investigates an incident.

A spokesperson told ABC 17 News on Wednesday morning that the school district placed the Eugene Field Elementary School teacher on immediate leave after it was made aware of the incident. The spokesperson said placement on a leave of absence is a standard procedure and will allow the school district to review the incident.

The school district released the following statement about the incident:

"Mexico Public Schools remains committed to protecting our students and ensuring that they have a safe learning environment. Please know we appreciate your cooperation and support as we continue to work together to create a culture where every student feels valued and respected."

The district didn't release any other information, citing employee and student privacy laws.

More details about what happened or the name of the teacher placed on leave were not released.

ABC 17 News will update this story once the school district releases new information.
