COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

School districts across Mid-Missouri are canceling Thursday classes with several more inches of snow expected to fall Wednesday night into Thursday.

Columbia Public Schools and the Jefferson City School District, the two largest in Mid-Missouri, said Wednesday afternoon that they'll be closed Thursday. The National Weather Service has received reports of 6 inches of snow in each city.

Some Mid-Missouri schools began announcing Thursday closures around noon on Wednesday as snow continued to blanket the area. CPS made its announcement shortly before 1 p.m. and JC Schools released its decision at about 3 p.m.

Other districts closing Thursday include Fulton, Moberly, Harrisburg, Southern Boone, California, Mexico, Hallsville, New Franklin, Westran, Sturgeon and NE Randolph County. Boonville will be virtual only.

Colleges and universities also have alternate plans for Thursday, with the University of Missouri on virtual classes and the Columbia College campus closed. Columbia College will hold night classes virtually Thursday.

Westminster College is closed Thursday and William Woods University will hold classes online only.

The Boone County government announced its offices will be closed Thursday, as well.

About 5 inches of snow had already fallen on Columbia as of about 11 a.m., with another 3 to 5 inches expected. The ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather team has issued a Weather Alert Day and the area remains under a winter storm warning into Thursday.

Snow covered all the area's roads and crashes stalled traffic on Interstate 70 on Columbia's western edge.
