Police investigate after man shot in Central Columbia



COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Several Columbia Police Department vehicles were seen in Central Columbia, just south of Business Loop 70 on Wednesday evening.
One man was shot on Jefferson Street and police responded to leads that a possible suspect ran into a house on Madison Street, CPD Lt. Scott Alpers said at the scene. Police have not been able to find anyone in that house
Alpers said that police believe the man who was shot has non-life-threatening injuries and was brought to an area hospital by ambulance.
Five evidence markers were placed at the scene.
At least four Columbia police officers were seen near the intersection of Madison and Orange streets. Police had called for someone to come out of the home.
Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers were also on the scene. Police were also searching the area with flashlights and put up crime scene tape around 6:35 p.m. They brought the tape down around 8 p.m. The scene cleared at 8:09 p.m.
Multiple officers had approached the door with a shield around 7 p.m. before backing away from the door. Police put down evidence markers at 7:30 p.m. and were searching the area with a metal detector.
CPD wrote on its social media at 7:05 p.m. that it was responding to a shots-fired call in the area.
"Columbia Police are responding to a shots fired call in the 1100 block of Madison Street. The public is urged to avoid the area at this time," the post says.
A public safety alert was also issued to some residents’ cellphones, stating there is an “active situation with a subject in the 1100 block of Jefferson. Residents should avoid the area and remain indoor if nearby. Law enforcement is on the scene. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available. Please stay clear for your safety and allow emergency responders to operate."
A second notification that gave the "all-clear" was sent around 8:20 p.m.
