‘Person of interest’ in custody in Fort Leonard Wood soldier death

Army Major Gen. Christopher Beck on the discovery on Sgt. Sarah Roque's body

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

One person is in custody in the death of a sergeant stationed at Fort Leonard Wood.

The base's Facebook page posted an update Thursday afternoon saying a "person of interest" had been taken into custody in the death of Sgt. Sarah Roque. Her death is being investigated as a homicide.

U.S. Army Major Gen. Christopher Beck said at a Thursday morning news conference that the FBI and other agencies are helping the Army with the homicide investigation. Beck said Roque's body was found in a dumpster near base housing for single soldiers.

Roque was from Indiana and was a bridge crew member and mine dog handler, according to a social media post from the base.

Fort Leonard Wood focuses on engineering and military police and trains 70,000-75,000 soldiers each year, according to the base's latest fact sheet. Nearly 500 international soldiers are trained each year from more than 70 nations.
