Man pleads guilty to assault in October 2022 shooting in northeast Columbia

A Columbia man pleaded guilty to three felonies, including assault, in a 2022 northeast Columbia shooting.

Anthony Smith Jr. pleaded guilty on Friday to first-degree assault, first-degree robbery and unlawful use of a weapon. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Court documents in previous reporting indicate that the victim was shot in their chest on Oct. 12, 2022, during a drug deal over marijuana near Indian Hills Park. The victim allegedly told police that two people pulled a gun on him and was shot by one of them. The victim had crashed a vehicle into several parked vehicles near the intersection of Kelsey and Shamrock drives after getting shot, previous reporting shows.

Previous reporting indicates that Smith allegedly told a second person accused in the shooting – Tyler Lopinto – in a text message that he needed transportation for the robbery.

Lopinto, 18, of Columbia, is charged with first-degree assault, first-degree robbery, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon. He is being held at the Boone County Jail without bond. Lopinto has a hearing scheduled for 8 a.m. Monday, Oct. 7 by video from the jail.
