Woman charged with child abduction has arraignment set for July 24
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)
A woman who was described as a former teacher in court documents has an arraignment for a felony charge scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 24.
Ashley Jones-Kaufman, of Jefferson City, was charged with child abduction on June 4. Court records show she posted a $10,000 bond on June 25. The probable cause statement says she was a teacher at Thorpe Gordon Elementary in Jefferson City. District spokesman Ryan Burns confirmed in an email that Jones-Kaufman no longer works for the district.
According to the probable cause statement, the victim allegedly told police on June 3 that he had not seen his children since May 17. The victim and Jones-Kaufman were described as going through a divorce in the probable cause statement and have 50/50 custody of one of the children.
The statement says the victim tried to contact Jones-Kaufman several times, but was unsuccessful. The man then went to Thorpe Gordon, where the children were allegedly supposed to be enrolled in summer school, but he learned they never were, court documents say.
Court documents say Jones-Kaufman also took the children’s transcripts when she left, “possibly indicating she would be enrolling them in a different school.”
The victim allegedly told police that Jones-Kaufman could have gone to Washington D.C., the statement says. Police contacted Jones-Kaufman’s mother, who allegedly said she could have gone on vacation, the statement says.
