A Jefferson City man was charged on Thursday with third-degree child molestation.

Stephen Kelly Kersey was arrested by the Jefferson City Police Department at 1:13 p.m. Thursday. He is being held at the Cole County Jail without bond. A court date has not been set.

According to the probable cause statement, the mother of the victim told law enforcement that Kersey sexually assaulted the child while they were sleeping.

The mother was not able to give an exact date, but stated the assault occurred a few weeks ago, court documents say. However, the probable cause statement lists May 29 as a possible date.
