The driver of a car that crashed into a Habitat for Humanity house Monday in Jefferson City has been charged with driving while intoxicated.

John McNew, 23, was charged with DWI causing serious physical injury and three misdemeanors: Reckless driving, driving without a license and not having car insurance. He is being held at the Cole County Jail without bond. An arraignment is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Cole County Circuit Court.

The crash caused the house at 1612 Edmonds Street to become uninhabitable. A victim in the crash was brought to an area hospital and had a broken toe, court documents say.

The probable cause statement says that McNew had signs of drug intoxication, including having a raspy voice, being “fidgety” and having a “track mark” on his arm. McNew allegedly denied using drugs before saying he consumed marijuana before the crash, the statement says. He also was not able to give police proof of insurance or a driver’s license, the statement says.

McNew was arrested and allegedly agreed to participate in a DRE evaluation, which determined he was impaired by a stimulant and marijuana, court documents say.
