COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A woman charged with child abuse died Monday morning in the Morgan County Jail, the sheriff's office said Wednesday.

Megan Maddy, 34, of Stover, Missouri, suffered a seizure and became unresponsive at about 7:30 a.m. Monday, the sheriff's office says in a release posted on Facebook. Jail staff gave her emergency medical attention including CPR and use of a defibrillator but Maddy died at Lake Regional Hospital just after 9 a.m., the release says.

An autopsy was conducted Tuesday and listed the cause of death as a heart attack, the sheriff's office says.

Maddy was jailed with her husband, Leland Maddy, after a concerned citizen allegedly saw one of their children with a black eye and reported it. She had been charged with child abuse, misdemeanor domestic assault and child endangerment.

Leland Maddy remains charged with child abuse and endangerment and illegal gun possession.

The Morgan County Sheriff's Office did not say whether an investigation is taking place. The office and the county prosecutor have not responded to messages left by ABC 17 News.
