Police: One arrested in relation to shooting at Cosmo-Bethel Park
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Columbia police arrested a 24-year-old man after officers found shell casings at Cosmo-Bethel Park on Friday afternoon.
Police updated a social media post around 10:15 p.m. Friday to say that Daqwon Jackson, of Columbia, was arrested on suspicion of armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, first-degree assault, first-degree domestic assault and drug possession. He has yet to appear on the Boone County Jail roster as of 10:30 p.m.
Police initially said there were no injuries, however Columbia Police Department spokesperson Jenny Hopper told ABC 17 News that one person was found with a gunshot wound. Hopper said that person's injuries were "non-life threatening." Hopper said the victim was found at Willowbrook Court, which is located in northeast Columbia.
Police were dispatched to the scene at Cosmo-Bethel Park at 2:15 p.m. The scene was cleared at 3:12 p.m.
Police say no one is in custody, but say they are looking into possible suspects. CPD also claims there is no threat to the public. An officer at Willowbrook Court stated the victim lived in a home on that street.
Police tape was seen at the Cosmo-Bethel Park by an ABC 17 News reporter, but officers began taking down tape around 2:50 p.m. There were five Columbia police officers on the scene when the reported arrived.
According to a social media post from CPD, while officers were investigating Cosmo-Bethel Park, Boone County Joint Communications received a call about an adult with a gunshot wound in the 2500 block of Willowbrook Court. The post says the victim was brought to an area hospital.
The name of the victim has not been released.
Multiple Columbia schools were placed on a "hold and secure" as police investigated Cosmo-Bethel Park, according to an email from Columbia Public Schools spokesperson Michelle Baumstark.
Baumstark sent a follow-up email at 2:40 p.m. stating the procedure was lifted by police after 20 minutes.
"Columbia Police are investigating an incident. The incident is not related to our schools. Based on the information provided by law enforcement, the district has placed 3 buildings, Rock Bridge High School, Gentry Middle School, Bethel Street Center, close to the incident in a hold and secure," Baumstark's email states. "A hold and secure means that no one may enter or exit the building. Learning continues inside. Our building doors are secure.
"We have sent a notification to families regarding the current status of the buildings. Students are safe," Baumstark said. "When we receive additional information from law enforcement and the hold and secure can be lifted, we’ll message families again."
The Columbia Police Department wrote on its Facebook page to "avoid the area of Bethel between Southampton and Nifong. The incident did not occur at any Columbia public schools."
