Columbia man charged in relation to March 2023 shootings
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
A Columbia man accused in a March 2023 shooting on Mexico Gravel Road was arrested on Tuesday night.
Damion Daniels, 28, was charged on Monday with two counts of unlawful use of a weapon and two counts of armed criminal action. He is being held at the Boone County Jail without bond. A court appearance was scheduled for Wednesday.
According to the probable cause statement, police were dispatched on March 14 to the 2900 block of Mexico Gravel Road for a shots fired call. A dark SUV was allegedly seen on video shooting towards an apartment building and later a white Dodge Journey that belonged to Deazjon Brown was seen, court documents say.
Brown, 28, was arrested in May and charged with unlawful use of a weapon, armed criminal action and illegal gun possession. He is being held at the Boone County Jail without bond. A motion to sever the illegal gun possession charge was filed on Wednesday.
Police blocked off part of Mexico Gravel Road after the shooting near Mystic Pine Townhomes. Officers put down more than a dozen evidence markers believed to be bullet casings at the scene.
Police identified Brown as a suspect in the March 14 shooting after an officer identified his vehicle in the area, according to a probable cause statement. A witness also told police that Brown was involved in the shooting, the statement says.
In another case, Daniels pleaded guilty on Sept. 1, 2023, to third-degree domestic assault, unlawful use of a weapon and first-degree endangering the welfare of a child. He was sentenced to five years of supervised probation with a four-year suspended sentence.
While responding to that domestic assault on April 14, the victim had allegedly told police that they had information about Daniels’ alleged involvement with “recent shootings,” court documents say. One of the shootings described in the probable cause statement included one on Scott Boulevard on March 13, 2023. Police viewed a text-message exchange on March 13 describing a scene, the statement says.
After Daniels was arrested for the domestic assault charge, police were able to view the locations on his phone during March 13 and March 14, the statement says. His phone location was on Scott Boulevard before the call to EMS was made, the statement says.
