Police: Columbia shooting suspect is ‘person of interest’ in homicide

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A suspect in a March shooting in Columbia is also a person of interest in a homicide and "multiple recent shootings," according to police.

Officers arrested Deazjon Brown, 28, on Wednesday in connection with a March 14 shooting. Prosecutors have charged him with unlawful use of a weapon, armed criminal action and illegal gun possession in connection with that shooting.

Police blocked off part of Mexico Gravel Road after the shooting near Mystic Pine Townhomes. Officers put down more than a dozen evidence markers believed to be bullet casings at the scene.

Police identified Brown as a suspect in the March 14 shooting after an officer identified his vehicle in the area, according to a probable cause statement. A witness also told police that Brown was involved in the shooting, the statement says.

According to the probable cause statement, Brown was seen by police officers driving to another home in the area with his face covered and wearing dark clothing. Brown allegedly got into another car, which the court document identified as a black Chrysler. A police officer followed this car and attempted to pull it over on Interstate 70, but the car failed to stop.

On March 20, a gun was found on the median of Interstate 70 near the Stadium Boulevard exit. This is where the officer who tried to pull the car with Brown in it over. According to the probable cause statement, the bullets from the gun found on the median matched the ones that were used at the shooting on March 14. The condition of the gun also provides reason for police to believe that it was thrown from a car.

The statement also notes that a car with bullet holes that Brown allegedly shot at was found.

Brown was jailed Thursday without bond and had an afternoon court appearance scheduled. Police argued against bond in the probable cause statement, saying in part that Brown is a danger to the community because he is a person of interest in a recent homicide and multiple recent shootings.

ABC 17 News reached out to the Boone County Prosecutor's Office for more information regarding the homicide Brown is allegedly involved in. As of Thursday evening, no one was available.
