Three felonies charged in deadly crash outside Columbia apartment complex

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Columbia woman is set to appear in court later this month on three felony charges related to a deadly motorcycle crash last summer outside a Columbia apartment complex.

Elizabeth Lopez, a resident of Kelly's Ridge apartments, was charged Tuesday with leaving the scene of a crash that caused a death and two counts of leaving the scene of a crash that caused injuries.

Lopez, 24, was arrested and posted a $7,500 bond after the August crash. She has a hearing set for Jan. 24.

Police say Lopez was leaving the apartment complex on Aug. 5, 2023, when she pulled out in front of two motorcycles. Walker Davis, 18, of Columbia, was thrown from his motorcycle and died in the collision.

Two people were thrown from the other motorcycle and taken to a hospital for treatment.

A probable cause statement alleges Lopez turned around and went back to her apartment after the crash. Police say Lopez didn't make herself known to them as they investigated and towed her Volkswagen Golf from outside her apartment.

She called the police early the next morning to provide insurance information and a statement, according to court documents.

Lopez allegedly told police that she told her boyfriend about the crash and had an alcoholic drink after going back to her apartment.

Brian McCallister, who is a lawyer for the Davis family, told ABC 17 News that “the family is grateful that some measure of justice is being done and that the Davis family looks forward to trial.”

ABC 17 News reached out to the Davis family on Wednesday afternoon. Walker's father expressed frustration that it took so long for Lopez to be charged; specifically, that it was nearly five months before they got a police report.
