A California, Missouri, man was arrested and posted bond on Tuesday after hitting a Sedalia man with a truck and leaving the scene, according to court documents.

Ethan Daniels, 20, was charged on Tuesday with leaving the scene of an accident – causing a serious injury, and operating a vehicle in a careless and imprudent manner. He was arrested early Tuesday and was released later in the day after posting bond, according to a spokesperson from the Moniteau County Jail. His bond was $10,000.

A Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report states Jeremy Maupin, 46, was hit by Daniels on Business 50 in California at 6:15 p.m. Monday. Daniels was heading west on Business 50 in a 2008 Dodge 2500

According to the online crash report, Daniels looked at this phone, went off the right side of the road, came back onto the road and hit Maupin.

The report states Maupin was taken to St. Mary's Regional Hospital in Jefferson City by ambulance with serious injuries.

According to the probable cause statement, troopers asked the California Police Department for help finding a possible video from security footage from nearby businesses. An officer had allegedly stated that Daniels owned a truck similar to what was seen in the video at the time of the crash. After another check, law enforcement determined the Dodge seen in the video could have been stored in Clarksburg, the statement says.

The probable cause statement says the Dodge was located in California, Missouri, and police saw a white truck with the passenger side damaged in the driveway of a residence. Troopers knocked on the door and man answered the door saying it was his girlfriend’s house and allegedly said he didn’t know anything about the Dodge.

A woman came to the door and allegedly said the Dodge belonged to her cousin, who dropped it off at her residence because it was damaged and then used her truck to drive, the statement says.

Law enforcement arrived to Daniels’ residence. His girlfriend answered and the trooper asked for Daniels to come outside, the statement says. The trooper interviewed Daniels in his patrol car, where Daniels allegedly said that he didn’t see anything and only heard a noise and felt a bump.

Daniels eventually told the trooper that he looked down at his phone “between two and four seconds,” and saw a yellow flash when he looked up, felt a bump and heard a noise, according to the probable cause statement.
