A Monroe County man charged with second-degree murder filed an appeal to be represented by a public defender.

Lyle Miller, 65, of Madison, is accused of murdering Betty Hayes in 2021. He is being held at the Monroe County Jail without bond.

Miller appeared in court without counsel Wednesday and chose to remain silent, according to court records. The Missouri State Public Defender’s Office previously denied Miller’s request on Friday, stating that he does not meet the financial requirements.

The court determined to not amend his bond Wednesday. A counsel state hearing is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 28. A preliminary hearing is set for 10 a.m. the next day.
