COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
A man who reported being suicidal was killed after shooting at officers Friday afternoon, a Columbia Police Department assistant chief said.
Police were called twice to the apartment at The Landing, a complex on Campusview Drive in south Columbia. The first call came a little after 3 p.m. and the second call -- made by the person police came in contact with -- came just before 4 p.m., CPD Assistant Chief Lance Bolinger said.
When officers arrived, the person with a gun shot first in the air, then at officers, he said. Police returned fire and the suspect was killed, Bolinger said.
"In response, officers returned fire, resulting in the subject’s death," CPD stated in a Friday night press release.
The Columbia Police Department has asked the Missouri State Highway Patrol's Division of Drug and Crime Control to investigate the shooting because of an officer's involvement, the patrol said in a social post.
More than one officer fired during the incident, Bolinger said.

Police tape on the sidewalk was taken down at 6:58 p.m. Crime scene tape is still up on the west side of the building until 9:35 p.m.
