Teen charged in connection with 2020 Cosmo Park murder

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Boone County Prosecutors have charged a teenager with the 2020 murder in Cosmo Park

Detravion Coats has been charged with second-degree murder, armed criminal action, and first-degree assault after he is accused of setting up a drug deal that lead to the shooting death of Jermaine Spain.

Coats was arrested back in April but his name was not released.

According to court documents, police were dispatched to a call for a shooting at Cosmo Park on November 2, 2020, where Spain was found dead.

Police say that they were able to use videos from Snapchat and text messages to show that Coats set up the drug deal.

Videos also allegedly show Coats in the backseat of a car on the night of the murder holding the gun Columbia Police think is the murder weapon.

A second probable cause statement states that Coats was seen leaving his apartment with a handgun. Police were aware that Coats had a juvenile detainer warrant for his arrest for second-degree murder and first-degree robbery.

Coats is also charged with resisting arrest by fleeing and creating substantial risk after he ran from police and also threw the gun onto a porch before being arrested.

Maurice Banks Jr. and Isaiah Brunson are charged in connection to the shooting. Banks is set to go to trial in August and the jury trial for Brunson is set for October.
