Fulton donut shop prepares to reopen after break-in
FULTON, Mo. (KMIZ)
A Fulton donut shop is in the process of reopening after a break-in earlier this week.
Fulton police told ABC 17 News that Go Nuts Donuts & Bakery on 102 N. Ravine St. was broken into on Wednesday. The intruders spilled ingredients on the floor and painted graffiti. However, nothing was stolen from the business.
When the store's owner Krystal McKenzie arrived at her shop on Thursday morning she realized something wasn’t right.
“I was getting ready to walk in and I noticed the deadbolt was on the outside of the other door,” McKenzie told ABC 17. “I was kinda saying ‘well that’s not normal’ and then I walked in and that’s when I saw everything just destroyed.”
The damages included curse words and obscene images spray painted on the walls. Tables and chairs were covered in graffiti, ingredients were flung all over the kitchen, her antique display case shattered, and the ovens were destroyed.
“One of the ovens had all the wires pulled out of it. one had - the stove top was completely smashed. My firers were damaged. like everything that I would normally use,” McKenzie said.
Police told her they have seen an uptick in vandalism but so far they have no leads as to who broke in.
Mckenzie estimated damages were around 40-45 thousand dollars.
Her goal is to reopen on Monday with a limited menu. But that may not be possible.
“I cannot move forward until the insurance releases. I couldn’t finish cleaning up. can’t take anything out until insurance says I can.
She has a decade of experience baking but decided now was finally the time to open her shop. In all her years working at other bakeries she says she has never seen anything like this happen before.
“It's heartbreaking for sure but we'll get through it.”
The recent events may have halted business. but the bakery called it a "blessing in disguise." Now that McKenzie has all this newfound free time while the bakery is closed she decided to give back to the community.
Go Nuts Donuts & Bakery announced via a Facebook post that they will be hosting a free pancake breakfast on Sunday from 8 to 11 a.m.
"There are a lot of kids in this community and families that are struggling with food insecurity, especially since schools out,” McKenzie said. “So I just ordered a whole bunch of pancake mix and stuff. I mean we’re not open so I figured now would be a perfect time. We have plenty of time to do it. my main equipment is broken but we have an electric skillet.”
Because of the damage to the inside of her bakery, there will be tables set up outside with to-go boxes. Anyone who wants a free meal is welcome to come.
