Man charged with murder in relation to 2020 McDonald’s shooting on Clark Lane

A Jefferson City man was charged Friday in relation to the 2020 shooting death of Marqukis Hayes at a McDonald’s on Clark Lane in Columbia.
Correy Greene, 33, is charged with second-degree murder, unlawful transfer of a weapon, unlawful possession of a gun and armed-criminal action. He is not in custody. No court dates have been set.
Angelica Benitez pleaded guilty in August to second-degree murder, abandonment of a corpse and evidence tampering. Judge Kevin Crane sentenced her to 20 years for murder, four years for corpse abandonment and four years for evidence tampering. The sentences will be served consecutively.
A probable cause statement says Benitez was in a pickup truck with Hayes and Greene, who was driving, in the drive-thru of the Clark Lane McDonald's when she shot Hayes in the face with a pistol. The statement says Greene investigators he did not know why Benitez shot Hayes.
Greene drove to the parking lot of an adjacent motel, a Super 8 and got out, according to the probable cause statement. Greene allegedly told communications that he saw Hayes laying down in the back seat of the truck and believe he was dead.
Hayes was initially reported as missing.
After the shooting, Benitez and Greene went to the Super 8 motel on Clark Lane, according to the statement. Benitez then drove away in a pickup truck which was later found in Valley Park, Missouri, with a dead body in the back seat, according to the statement. Investigators confirmed the body was that of Hayes, the document says.
Greene called emergency services on Dec. 15, 2020, about the Dec. 14 shooting. Investigators found the truck on Dec. 17, 2020.
Greene was on probation and did not tell his probation officer about the murder because Benitez was his girlfriend, according to the probable cause statement. He allegedly said he had never seen the gun she used before and did not know she owned a gun. Benitez claimed that on the day of the murder, Greene had possession of the gun for most of the day, according to the probable cause statement.
In August, Benitez allegedly said Greene bought her the gun as a gift in October 2020. Benitez also said – according to the probable cause statement – that before the murder, Greene was emotional about how Hayes “snitched” on him and she told him she would “handle” the situation.
