Court documents: Baby spared in Columbia double killing
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
The man who shot two people dead late Saturday in northeast Columbia spared his infant child, according to documents filed in court.
Cadilac M. Derrick, 35, of Columbia, was arrested in Moberly after the shooting in the 1600 block of Boyd Lane, police said. He was in the Boone County Jail on Monday on two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of armed criminal action.
Police were called to an apartment on Boyd Lane at nearly 11 p.m. Saturday. A woman told dispatchers that Derrick refused to give her house keys and had been abusing her, according to court documents. She also said Derrick threatened her, including threats that he would kill her if she didn't stay with him, the probable cause statement says.
Another person references the baby being in the room, the statement says.
Dispatchers heard gunshots and a man's voice saying things including "now what" after the shooting, according to documents.
The probable cause statement says Derrick was the father of an infant with one of the two women who were killed. Police identified the women Sunday as Lea'johna Sanders, 22, and Laura Myers, 53, both of Columbia. Officers found the baby in the apartment, according to the statement.
A license plate reader caught Derrick's car on Ballenger Lane and police later found the car off the road in Moberly, the statement says. The front and rear plates were removed from the car, police say. Derrick turned himself in at the Moberly Police Department.
Derrick told police one of the women shot at him and that he struggled with her over the gun, according to the statement. He got the gun and started shooting, he allegedly told investigators. Derrick allegedly said his license plates fell off his vehicle. It wasn't clear who he allegedly struggled with -- the victims' names are redacted in the police statement.
Derrick has a history of domestic violence accusations. He was charged with two counts of felony domestic abuse and a count of child endangerment in September for an August incident. At the time of the alleged crime, he was also on probation for peace disturbance.
Derrick made his initial court appearance Monday afternoon. He did not enter a plea and said he plans to hire a lawyer. He was ordered to remain in jail without bond and has another court date scheduled for Nov. 15. His preliminary hearing is set for Dec. 7.
