Hartsburg man charged with first-degree murder in father’s stabbing death

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Prosecutors have charged a Hartsburg man with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in the weekend stabbing death of his father.

Collin Q. Knight, 23, was charged Saturday with first-degree murder and armed criminal action after Boone County deputies found his father's body late Friday at the Knights' home in the 18000 block of Old Route A between Ashland and Hartsburg.

Knight appeared via video from the Boone County Jail Tuesday for his initial court appearance.

During the hearing, Boone County Judge Stephanie Morrell denied Knight bond and ordered a bond investigation.

Knight's father died after being stabbed more than 15 times, according to a probable cause statement. Deputies found Knight in the garage of a neighboring house after he contacted dispatchers, the statement says.

Deputies say Knight admitted to them that he made a mistake and that the dead man was his father but said he did not want to make any other statement.

A search of the house turned up bloody clothes, a bloody knife, a wallet and Collin Knight's ID in a back bedroom.

Deputies say he was on probation at the time of the incident for assaulting two family members with knives in 2018. Court records show he pleaded guilty to first-degree domestic assault in 2019. After the 2018 stabbing, court documents say Knight was placed in a mental health facility for evaluation.

Back in August of 2015, Knight suffered multiple injuries during a jet skit crash on Thomas Hill Lake in Randolph County. According to court documents, Paul Knight sued Knight's grandparents claiming they neglected him while supervising him at the lake. A judge awarded the Knight's $6 million for Collin's injuries.

Knight is currently being held in the Boone County Jail. He's due back in court on September 13th for a bond hearing and on October 5th for a preliminary hearing.
