Police use surveillance video to find suspects in Columbia parking lot shooting
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Columbia police tracked down the suspects in a deadly Saturday shooting in a store parking lot by identifying a license plate in surveillance video, according to court documents.
Loyal B. Martell, 22, of Holts Summit and Joshua R.L. Dudley, 22, of Kirksville, Missouri, were arrested over the weekend in Callaway County and Kirksville, respectively, in connection with the Saturday shooting death of Shavez Waage, 22, of Columbia. Police said Waage was shot to death in the parking lot of Moser's supermarket on North Keene Street in east Columbia.
Both Martell and Dudley made their first appearance in court Monday and are being held in the Boone County Jail on no bond. Both said they are looking to hire an attorney.
Investigators used surveillance video to get the license plate number of the suspects' vehicle, according to court documents. Police in Kirksville found the vehicle and arrested Dudley, who told them he and Martel met Waage in the parking lot with plans of robbing him, the statement says. Dudley allegedly told police that Martell was the shooter.
The surveillance video showed Waage's vehicle pulling up to the gray Ford Fusion that was later found in Kirksville, according to the statement. Two people got out of the Fusion and into Waage's vehicle then later got back into the Fusion and left.
Police say license plate readers then picked up the Fusion driving north on Highway 63 about an hour after the shooting.
Prosecutors charged Martell with first-degree murder, armed robbery, unlawful use of a weapon and armed criminal action. Dudley was charged with second-degree murder, armed robbery and armed criminal action.
Martell and Dudley both have bond hearings on August 24.
