Free COVID-19 testing event canceled in Columbia

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Missouri's Department of Health and Senior Services had planned to bring free COVID-19 testing to Columbia but the Friday event was canceled.

The testing event was scheduled in partnership with Mako Medical Laboratories and would have been held from noon to 3 p.m. in the Moser's parking lot at 705 Business Loop 70 West.

State health department spokeswoman Lisa Cox said in an email poor registration is what canceled the event.

The event was not listed on the state's website Friday morning, but the Columbia/Boone County Department of Public Health and Human Services posted about the event Thursday.

ABC 17 News crews were able to successfully register Friday morning, even though the event no longer appeared on the state's schedule.

The testing event closure comes days after SSM Health closed its drive-thru COVID-19 testing site in Mexico. On Tuesday, MU Health Care announced its testing site at the Mizzou North building would no longer have Saturday hours. Both announcements were made because of reduced demand for testing around the area.

SSM St. Mary's patients can still get tested at a walk-in clinic in Mexico and the MU drive-thru site is still open on weekdays.
