MU Health Care awaiting coronavirus vaccine shipment missed last week

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Missouri has surpassed 1 million doses of coronavirus vaccine administered to residents.

As of Monday, a total of 1,029,785 coronavirus vaccinations had been given out to Missourians, according to the state's COVID-19 dashboard. This number includes first and second doses.

About 700,000 first doses have been given out and 326,771 second doses have been administered, with about 11.5% of Missourians receiving a first dose and 5.3% being fully vaccinated against the novel coronavirus.

However, last week's extreme winter weather delayed vaccine shipments and postponed some mass vaccination events. Now health care organizations are trying to get back on track.

MU Health Care

MU Health Care was waiting Monday morning to hear when it will receive the 4,000 Moderna doses that were promised for a mass vaccination event last week. Shipping problems related to brutal cold and snow delayed those doses.

“We are still awaiting confirmation on when the Moderna shipment will arrive, so we will wait to re-schedule those signed up for Friday and Sunday until we know for sure when to expect those doses,” Brad Myers, MU Health Care director of pharmacy and laboratory services, said in an MU Health Care release. “Those with appointments this week should know we will reach out to reschedule their appointment to ensure they receive the vaccine.”

MU Health Care said confirmation of when those doses will be arriving might come as early as Monday.

Those wishing to sign up for a vaccine can go to MU Health Care's website to fill out the combined survey for MU Health Care, Boone Health and the Columbia/Boone County health department.

MU Health spokesman Eric Maze said 9,162 people have been vaccinated at the Faurot Field vaccination site. Nearly 52,000 people were signed up for the survey Monday morning with 29,071 people currently eligible to receive the vaccine under the state's criteria.

Maze the numbers on the survey are constantly changing as people sign up or opt-out of the sign-up list.

Boone Hospital Center

Boone Hospital Center plans to vaccinate 500 people Monday at the Columbia Mall. Last Wednesday, Boone Hospital vaccinated 100 people at another event held at the mall.

Boone Hospital Center spokesman Ben Cornelius said "we are unsure if or when we might receive additional vaccine, but we are hoping that we can begin receiving regular shipments in the near future."

Cole County

Cole County health care organizations are working with the Missouri National Guard to hold a second dose mass coronavirus vaccination event Friday at The Linc.  A clinic for first doses was held Feb. 5.

Kristi Campbell of the Cole County Health Department said in a news release that the clinic will be organized in a way "almost identical" to the first-dose clinic.

The United States has lost nearly 500,000 to COVID-19 since the pandemic began about a year ago. As of noon on Monday, the total on the Johns Hopkins University COVID-19 dashboard sat at 499,128 deaths.

According to John Hopkins, 2,469,729 lives had been lost globally to the virus.
