MU reviewing mask policy following new city ordinance

COLUMBIA Mo. (KMIZ)

A spokesperson for the University of Missouri said the school will review its mask policy after the City of Columbia approved a new mask ordinance Monday night.

"We have been aware of the conversation regarding the new city ordinance on masks and will be reviewing the approved ordinance over the next several days," MU spokesman Christian Basi said.

According to an amendment to the ordinance approved by the city council, MU is considered an "exempt entity." It means the provisions of the ordinance do not apply to any university property located or owned within city limits.

On June 29, MU said it would require students and employees to wear face coverings in classrooms in the fall as a way to fight the spread of COVID-19.

In a message to students and staff, university administrators said the use of masks will be encouraged but not required in indoor, open areas. Workers in offices where 6 feet of distance between people is achievable will not be required to wear face coverings either.

"Our policies regarding face coverings will adjust according to any changes in local public health requirements and guidance," the message said.

Basi said MU is working collaboratively on the effect of the new ordinance on the university.

"Individuals from several task groups will likely come together to determine how the ordinance might affect our current plans for reopening this fall," Basi said.

The city's mask ordinance is set to go into effect Friday at 5 p.m.
