Jefferson City Firefighters volunteering ahead of stay-at-home order

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

Volunteers with the fire department were at a Jefferson City Hy-Vee this morning. Off-duty fire crews were helping elderly citizens shop and handing out hand sanitizer at the door. The store also had specialized hours, opening an hour early.

This comes as Cole County imposes its stay at home order, which goes into effect today at 5 p.m. and is expected to last through April 11th.

ABC 17 talked to Ryan Lock, a firefighter volunteering, who spoke on the city's response so far saying, "Everyone has kind of bonded together and is doing a really good job."

There are exceptions to this order. Those include grocery shopping, trips to the doctor and going outdoors to exercise, among others.
