COOPER COUNTY, Mo. (KMIZ)

State troopers say a Marshall, Mo. man drowned in the Lamine River Monday night while swimming with his family.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol report said 25-year-old Joseph Johnson got caught in the current of the river at the Harriean Hill Access around 7:30 p.m.

Troopers said Johnson swam after a child who was caught in the river's current. He was able to get the child out of the water but couldn't escape the current, the report said.

The Cooper County Coroner pronounced Johnson dead at 8:56 p.m.

Troopers said Johnson's death marked Troop F's first drowning death of the year. The report said he didn't have a flotation device.
