Second snowstorm in less than a week covers Mid-Missouri roads
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
A winter storm has blanketed Mid-Missouri for the second time in a week, shutting down schools and making travel hazardous.
Snow began falling Thursday night and continued into Friday morning. The Columbia Regional Airport had measured 3.3 inches of new snow by 6 a.m. on top of accumulation already on the ground. Close to 3 inches had fallen in Jefferson City by 7 a.m., according to the National Weather Service.
The Missouri Department of Transportation's traveler information map showed all state highways in Mid-Missouri were covered in snow at about 8:30 a.m.
Several schools called off classes, including the area's largest districts in Columbia and Jefferson City.
Most main roads in and around the city were covered, including portions of Interstate 70, Business Loop 70, Stadium Boulevard, Providence Road, College Avenue and Route B.
Highway 63 was covered through Jefferson City.
Columbia Public Works said Friday morning that a 22-person plow crew began work at 7 a.m.
The ABC 17 News Stormtrack Weather Team has declared a Weather Alert Day through Friday early afternoon.
