Downtown Columbia residents concerned following Sunday morning shooting
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Some residents who live in Downtown Columbia say they're on edge after three people were shot Sunday morning on East Broadway.
Finn O'Hagan, a graduate student at the University of Missouri who lives Downtown, said he is not surprised there was a shooting.
"It does make me nervous hearing stuff like this because it's just becoming more and more of a pattern that, like, someone will come up and [say], 'Oh you hear about the shooting?' you're like, 'Oh, again?' That's not what I want to hear," O'Hagan said.
According to police, two men and a woman were shot. No suspect is in custody.
O'Hagan said he feels like he needs to keep his head on a swivel to avoid getting into a situation like what took place on Sunday morning.
"It's concerning, I don't really love it particularly, I love this university and I love downtown, and I love the people here," O'Hagan said. "I would love to see them not get shot"
Sunday's incident isn't the only time police have been in the area.
The Columbia Police Department were seen investigating a shots fired call on Nov. 3.
Tyler Metheney -- who is a Downtown resident and an employee at Nash Vegas, a bar on East Broadway --the night of the shooting.
"Everyone was kind of hoping it might have been fireworks," Metheney said. "We [Missouri Tigers football team] beat Oklahoma, I know it's a little late for that now, but like, that's kind of what people were hoping, and then you start to hear a lot of sirens and you're like, 'Oh, well, that's not fireworks.'"
Metheney said even though he lives a few minutes walk away from Nash Vegas, sometimes his coworkers give him a ride home, anyways.
"Broadway is an interesting place right now," Metheney said. "I tell my younger sister who's a freshman here, if you're ever out on Broadway and it becomes like 1 a.m., go home. Get an Uber and go home, there's always some shenanigans going on over there."
According to online dispatch records, the Columbia Police Department were called to East Broadway for reports of shots fired 11 times since Jan. 1, but all have occurred since April 11. Another two calls for shots heard have been made since June.
"On weekend nights, you can definitely tell that the downtown maybe gets like a little out of control," Downtown resident Sean Moser said. "On the weekends yeah, it's like definitely, especially Game Days too, it's like almost a different atmosphere."
While Moser is not particularly worried about being in the Downtown area late at night, he says he is just as much at-risk of something happening to him as anyone else.
