Mid-Missouri group holds protest for 100th straight day asking for peace in Gaza; submits petition calling for ceasefire

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

An area nonprofit held its 100th consecutive protest and vigil outside of Columbia City Hall on Wednesday.

For the past 100 days, Peaceworks has held a vigil calling for peace in Gaza. More than 40 people attended Wednesday's gathering, many of which were from organizations, including Mid-Missouri Fellowship of Reconciliation, the Charlie Atkins Chapter of Veterans for Peace and CoMo Jews for Ceasefire.

Mark Haim, the director of Peaceworks has attended nearly every vigil during this streak and doesn't plan on stopping.

"We want to see a ceasefire immediately, we want to see the provision of material aid. Simply, food, water and fuel, medical supplies to Gaza," Haim said. "We want to see just resolution to the conflict, we want the hostages and political prisoners released. And we want no US military involvement, cutting off the weapons going into Israel. All these are important steps to end this carnage."

Haim also said the group has attained 1,300 signatures for a petition asking for a ceasefire, release hostages and no US participation.

Following the rally, the peace advocates delivered petitions to the offices of Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Missouri). Arrangements are in the works to meet with staff at other Congressional offices, as well.

Vigils and protests have occurred regularly throughout Columbia, including the University of Missouri’s campus, since tensions rose between Israel and Hamas in October.
