Slackers closes after more than 30 years in downtown Columbia
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
A staple of downtown Columbia is closing its doors for good on Tuesday.
Slackers -- a store that sells CDs, vinyl, video games, comic books and more – has been in downtown Columbia since 1993. Store manager Will Smith told ABC 17 News that the store’s last day of operations was Tuesday, and merchandise has to be completely moved out by Friday.
Store shelves that used to be packed with collectibles and music were mostly empty on Tuesday afternoon.
“I’d like to thank for everyone who stopped by or shopped at Slackers in the past 30 years. It was a pleasure serving you,” Smith said.
The company has several locations around Illinois and Missouri. The Chesterfield location is listed as closed on the company’s website. The Jefferson City store will remain open. Other locations include the Mid Rivers Mall in St. Peters, St. Charles, the South County Mall, and three locations in Illinois in Alton, Glen Carbon and Fariview Heights.
Smith said the “writing was on the walls for about three or four years,” and that the Columbia store was underperforming, compared to other locations.
The store’s five employees were told about the closure at the beginning of May, Smith said.
The District shared a post on its social media on Tuesday to give a farewell to the business. There were 60 comments replying to the post, with many people expressing support for the business.
