Biden administration awards funding for 44 electric vehicle chargers in Columbia

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The City of Columbia is getting $3.6 million from the federal government to build 44 electric vehicle chargers.

The chargers will be placed in two parking garages, at the Columbia Public Library and at the Columbia Regional Airport, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced in a news release. Columbia's is one of 47 projects in 22 states and Puerto Rico to get funding under the grant program, the department says.

Sales of electric vehicles have more than quadrupled since President Joe Biden took office in 2021, according to the release. The grants are part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law passed under Biden.

In addition to installing the chargers, the money will go to project planning, communications and informing the public.

Columbia's is the only grant that was awarded in Missouri.
