Suspect in downtown Columbia shooting bonds out of jail

Boone County Sheriff's Office

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A man charged in connection with a shooting in downtown Columbia during the University of Missouri's homecoming weekend last fall has bonded out of the Boone County Jail.

According to online court records, Donye Jackson posted a surety bond of $200,000 on Monday.

A judge had set Jackson's bond at $200,000 during an arraignment in May. The bond came with conditions including that he must not contact any co-defendants in the case or have any weapons.

Jackson is charged with first-degree assault with serious physical injury, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon in connection with the Oct. 21 shooting. The shooting happened on Hitt Street near Locust Street around 11:30 p.m.

The shooting injured three people, including an MU student who investigators say was an innocent bystander. Investigators said one person suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder, another had a gunshot wound to the leg and the third was shot in the stomach.

According to court documents, investigators spoke with someone involved the next day. That person claimed he was in a parking lot by his car when a group of men got close, which made him upset. He told police he got into an argument with them and two men started shooting at him, according to the probable cause statement.

Investigators say they found shell casings and entered them into the National Integrated Database. They matched a shell casing that came from a gun owned by Jackson. Authorities arrested Jackson in Atlanta in March.

Jackson's attorney filed a motion Thursday asking for a bond reduction. A bond hearing was held Monday, but the judge declined to make any changes to Jackson's bond.

Jackson pleaded not guilty to the charges in May. His next court hearing is scheduled for Aug. 21 at 9 a.m.
