Popular Columbia swim club reports car break-ins
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
A popular, members-only Columbia swimming spot warned its members to take caution after a series of car break-ins Thursday.
The West Broadway Swim Club notified its members via Facebook, saying that four car windows had been broken and several purses were stolen.
Swim club president Krista Kippenberger said members should take their valuables out of their vehicles while spending time at the pool.
"I think a lot of people think that their purse is, even if it's tucked under the seat, is safe, and that wasn't the case," Kippenberger said.
Kippenberger also said that the swim club has cameras around the pool area after a break-in last year, but after Thursday's incidents, they have ordered more cameras to be put up in the parking lot.
Ryan May, with security company May Communications, shared four things people can do to prevent car break-ins:
- Always lock your car doors.
- Do not leave your keys or valuables in your car.
- Park in a visible and well-lit area whenever possible.
- If the parking lot has cameras try to park near them.
Columbia police did not respond to requests for more information about the swim club break-ins or vehicle break-ins in general.
