Columbia City Council to consider repealing city’s ban on roll carts

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Columbia's City Council is set to meet Monday night and will hear multiple ordinances relating to repealing the ban on roll carts in the city.

The first, would amend Chapter 22 of the City to repeal the ban on roll carts while the second would bring that ordinance to the voters in a special election on Aug 2.

Both ordinances are set to go through a first reading on Monday, with the council then being able to vote on both at its next meeting on April 4.

Previously, some residents have voiced complaints on the current trash pickup system, stating the ban on roll carts led to bag tearing and spilling, as well as increased injuries to workers.

This would not be the city's first discussion on roll carts, as the council voted not to hold a special election on the matter in November of 2020.

The council vote was 3-3, with Fourth Ward Councilman Ian Thomas absent.

Second Ward Councilman Michael Trapp, Fifth Ward Councilman Matt Pitzer and Sixth Ward Councilwoman Betsy Peters voted to put the repeal on the ballot.

First Ward Councilwoman Pat Fowler, Third Ward Councilman Karl Skala and Mayor Brian Treece voted against it.
