Columbia leaders unveil new marker to honor a prominent African-American leader

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Columbia leaders wrapped the unveiling of a new marker to honor a prominent African-American leader.

The marker memorializes Clara Miles. Miles helped establish the Miles Manor subdivision where that marker is located now.

The subdivision brought housing to 10 local African American families in the late 1950s.

Watch a replay of the presentation in the player below.

ABC 17 News spoke with one of the first people to live in the subdivision who explained the importance of the development.

Cause we had ownership, we had our ownership. We didn't have to rent and put off for housing we had our own space. If you had the money to come to Miles Manor, Miles Manor welcomed you in.

Miles also helped pass the Fair Housing ordinance in Columbia.
